He received the Emmy award for his role in the TV drama Poppies Are Also Flowers (1966). He starred in the romantic comedy with Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole How to Steal a Million (1966) by William Wyler. Then he portrayed the bandit Tuco in Sergio Leone’s famous western The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo, 1966), as well as starred in the film Mackenna's Gold (1969). He also acted in the historical drama shot in Yugoslav, Italian and French co-production Romance of a Horsethief (1971). During the 1970’s he starred in the drama Cinderella Liberty (1973), thrillers The Deep (1977) by Peter Yates and The Domino Principle (1977) by Stanley Kramer, then in the musical comedy Movie Movie (1978) by Stanley Donen and thriller Winter Kills (1979) by William Richert. In the 1980’s he returned to television. Nevertheless, he made some films such as the thriller The Hunter (1980) with Steve McQueen, comedy Tough Guys (1986) with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster. Comedy Nuts (1987) with Barbra Streisand and Richard Dreyfuss, crime drama The Two Jakes (1990) with Harvey Keitel and Jack Nicholson (who directed the film), in the famous Godfather: Part III (1990) starring Al Pacino and directed by Francis Ford Coppola and in the comedy The Associate (1996) directed by Donald Petrie and starring Whoopi Goldberg and Dianne Wiest. He remained active on television and on the big screen until 2010. His last role on film was at the age of ninety four in the film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010) by Oliver Stone. Among his last films are Keeping the Faith (2000), cameo role in Mystic River (2003) by Clint Eastwood and The Holiday (2006).
