Segundo de Chomón was an engineer interested in new technical possibilities. In 1902, in
Barcelona, he opened his own company for developing cine film and for hand
coloring film. At that time, he constructed a device for hand coloring film that
allows the passing of film tape frame by frame. He soon became the manager of
Pathé’s
branch office in Barcelona, and started to direct documentary and
short feature films. In 1905, he made his film Choque de trenes and
discovered that it was possible to record frame by frame. He used this technique
in his next film El hotel eléctrico (1905). He created the short animated
sequence for the film Le légende du fantôme (1907), and worked on films
such as Cabiria (1914), La guerra e il sogno di Momi (1917),
Napoleon
(1927; author of special effects). He is one of the pioneers of
film technique.
