Director
Paul Newman is an American actor, producer and director who started acting in his high school days. During the Second World War he served in the navy and in 1946 he enters Kenyon Colledge. After earning a degree in 1949 he transfers to Yale’s drama department where he graduates in 1954. Shortly after he moves to New York where he attends Lee Strasberg’s acting school. His Broadway debut was in the play Picnic by William Inge and he did some acting in television shows. He hated his big screen debut in The Silver Chalice (1954) so much that he published a newspaper ad apologizing to the audience. Still, he continued his work in TV series, and for his very next film Somebody up There Likes Me (1956), he received favorable reviews. For his part in the film The Long, Hot Summer (1958) he received the leading actor award in the Cannes film of 1958. Newman gave memorable roles in films: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) in which his partner was Elisabeth Taylor; The Hustler (1961) where he is an auto destructive pool player; Hud (1963) playing an unscrupulous young man; a detective in Harper (1966), a spy in Torn Curtain (1966), a rebellious inmate in Cool Hand Luke (1967) and a legendary outlaw with Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). After the huge success he joined forces with Redford as an experienced swindler in the film The Sting (1973). His next roles were a fireman in The Towering Inferno (1974), an ice hockey coach in Slap Shot (1977) and a fallen attorney at law in The Verdict (1982). The part of an aging pool hustler in The Color of Money (1986), an unofficial sequel to The Hustler, brought him an Oscar in the leading actor category in 1987. He continued acting during the nineties, playing in films Mr. & Mrs. Bridge (1990) by James Ivory, The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) by the Cohen brothers, Nobody\'s Fool (1994) by Roberta Benton, Where the Money Is (2000) by Marek Kanievska and Road to Perdition (2002) by Sam Mendes. As a long-term lover of cars and car races he borrowed his voice to the animated hero of the film Cars (2006). Although famous for his acting he tried directing as well making his debut with a drama Rachel, Rachel (1968); Sometimes a Great Notion (1971) follows in which he also performs as an actor; The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds (1972) in which his wife Joanne Woodward won the leading actress award in the Cannes film festival; television film The Shadow Box (1980); Harry & Son (1984) in which he acted and worked on the script; The Glass Menagerie (1987), made after a play by Tennessee Williams.
