Victor Sjöström

20.09.1879, Silbodal, Sveden - 31.01.1960, Stockholm, Sveden

He started off as actor in the Swedish theatre in Helsinki. Ten years later
he began acting and directing film (Mauritz Stiller’s films). His success came
with Ingeborg Holm, one of the first films of social critique. Sjöström
had a very distinctive style freed from theatrical bonds. It was characterized
by epic narration and unique visual expressiveness. In 1923 he went to Hollywood
where he shot nine films in six years ( some of them featured one of the most
famous actresses of the silent film – Lilian Gish). Having directed his last
movie in Great Britain, he continued his acting career. In Ingmar Bergman’s
Wild Strawberries
he made an impressive performance, also his last. Sjöström
is especially important as one of the first directors who explored new ways of
using film media (particularly close-ups and various shooting angles)
