Sremec was one of the most important Croatian directors of documentaries. He took a degree in Slavic languages and national history at the University of Philosophy in Zagreb. He started to work on film in 194 after working as a high school professor. He directed and wrote screenplays for about twenty short films. In his documentaries, he often deals with cultural and anthropological themes. His most famous films include Ljudi na točkovima (1963), Uspavana ljepotica (1953), Crne vode (1956), Učitelj plesa (1969), Vrijeme šutnje (1971). He wrote the screenplay for the Oscar winning animated film Surogat (1961), directed by Vukotić. He also directed short feature films such as Oklada Mr. Greena (1971). For many years, he worked as a collaborator at Television Zagreb for which he made the TV film in two parts, August Šenoa (1981). He also worked as a film critic and publicist, editor of the magazine “Film Culture”, and published a book of essay and critiques, “A View of Film”. He was the first professor of film history and film language at the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Philosophy in Zagreb.
