Mauritz Stiller

He worked in the ‘golden age’ of Swedish cinema, along with Victor Sjöström. He had a keen sense of comedy; critics have praised his film Ingeborg Holm as ‘the first realistic film in the world’. Stiller often adapted Selma Lagerlof’s works. Since he first began in the theatre, he was naturally inclined towards naturalism. Italian critic Mario Vardone claims that the father of modern film editing is Stiller, not Eisenstein. He influenced many directors, particularly Ernest Lubitsch. In 1942, he went to Hollywood with Greta Garbo, who was often a star of his films. Unfortunately, his health soon deteriorated and he had to quit directing. He died in Sweden with his friend Victor Sjöström at his side.

Synopsis:

Nils falls in love with a travelling violin player, Ingrid, despite his mother’s disapproval. He leaves home, but gets badly injured and loses his memory. Having returned, Ingrid helps him get better and he eventually regains his memory with the help of her music.
