Synopsis:
This is a Portuguese film biography about Amália Rodrigues, the most famous Portuguese singer of fado, who made that style world famous. Nicknamed the Queen of fado, she remains a heroine of the Portuguese people even after her 1999 death. Actress Sandra Barata Belo portrays her in this film, which follows her personal and professional life from her childhood in poverty to an international career. All the songs in the film are original recordings of performances by this unique singer. For her role of Amalia, Sandra Barata Belo won the award for Best Actress at the Golden Globes Festival in Portugal.

Singer’s biography: Amália Rodrigues (Lisbon, July 1, 1920 - Lisbon, Portugal, October 6, 1999), real name Amália da Piedade Rodrigues, was one of the most famous Portuguese fado singers and the biggest popularizer of that musical style in the world. She was nicknamed Rainha do Fado (Queen of fado). She died at the age of eighty and the Portuguese government proclaimed the day of her death an official mourning day. She was buried next to other great Portuguese people at the church of St. Engrácio. Her house became a hotel and she remains a legend. Even today, some Portuguese regard her as one of the greatest Portuguese people of all time (in a survey in 2007, she held the 17th spot).
