Lucía Puenzo

28.11.1976, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Director

Puenzo is a screenwriter, director and producer who continued the career path of her father, the famous film maker Luis Puenzo. Lucía studied literature at the university in Buenos Aires, and then continued her education at the National Film Institute. She started to work on film as screenwriter for TV series as well as several films such as The Whore and the Whale (La puta y la ballena, 2004) directed by her father.  She wrote several novels and made some of them into films that she herself directed. She made her directing debut with the drama XXY (2007) about an intersexual person. The film attracted the audience and critics’ attention alike, was shown at many international film festivals and won several awards. She continued to question hetero-normality with the film The Fish Child (El niño pez, 2009), but the film was not as successful as its predecessor. She showed further interest for human body and the (non)necessity for medical treatments in her third film Wakolda (2013), which won the awards for best film, director, adapted screenplay, leading actress and supporting actor from the Association of Argentinian Film Critics in 2014 as well as the awards from the Argentinian Film Academy for best film, director, leading actor, supporting actress and actor and best new actress.
