Director and screenwriter, before entering the film business, he studied philosophy, psychology and theatre studies. He wrote film critiques and directed in the theatre. In 1974 he made his debut on film with the television film, After Liverpool. In 1989 he made his film Der 7. Kontinent, which was the first part of his trilogy –the other two parts are Benny's Video (1992) and 71 Fragmente Einer Chronologie Des Zufalls (1994) – with a theme of
suppressed feelings that culminate in violence. Such thematic orientation became Haneke’s trademark. His film Code inconnu: Récit incomplet de divers voyages (2000) won a special award at the Cannes film festival. In 2001 he made La Pianiste, which achieved great success with the audience as well as critics.
