Director

Ballús is a director, screenwriter and editor. She graduated in editing and film from the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona in 1999. She directed short documentaries Grandad with a Movie Camera (L'avi de la camera, 2005), La gabi (2005), Quan plovien bombes (2007), Xip xap (2007) and then between 2008 and 2009 directed many episodes of the documentary TV series Barcelona any zero about people who have just moved to Barcelona. She also directed the sequel Barcelona any 1 about the impressions of those same people after spending one year in the city. Afterwards, she directed the short feature Immersió (2009), shot entirely underwater. Together with other female authors, she directed part of the omnibus Ferida arrel: Maria-Mercè Marçal (2012) about the Catalonian poet. The Plague (La plaga, 2013) is for now her first and only full-length feature film. For it she won the Sant Jordi award as best debut, Goya award for best new director, Gaudí award for best director, screenplay and editing in 2014 as well as the Propeler award at the Motovun Film Festival as best film in 2013.

Synopsis:

We follow a group of at a first glance unconnected characters who try to survive a summer in the suburbs of Barcelona. Local farmer Raül fights the nature in order to earn money for his family and employs Iurie as temporary help. He is an immigrant from Moldova currently training for a wrestling competition and needs a job to survive. Nurse Rosemarie arrives from the Philippines in search of a job. She is trying to take care of an older and very stubborn woman Maria.
