Synopsis:
Made by commission, this was originally supposed to be just a film about African art. Exploring the theme, it became apparent that the film would grow into something much bigger. Starting from the premise that statues may die too, the authors deal with the pernicious effects of European colonialism on African art. From the moment the artwork is catalogued and placed in a museum display, devoid of its real roots and the context in which it was created, to the influence on the African art development and its commercialization.
Although it won the Jean Vigo award in 1954, the film was was censored until 1963 because of its controversial approach.
