Ingrid Bergman is an American actress originally from Sweden. After finishing acting school in Stockholm, she worked in theatre and in several Swedish films. The most famous films from her “Swedish” phase are those by Gustaf Molander, and their biggest mutual success is Intermezzo (1936). In 1939, the American producer Selznick brought her to Hollywood as the potential heiress of Greta Garbo. The first film she made there was a remake of Intermezzo, directed by Gregory Ratoff. She achieved her first big success in 1942, with the romantic drama Casablanca. She won her first Oscar in 1944 for the film Gaslight. She was one of Hitchcock’s favorite actresses, appearing in several of his films: Spellbound (1945), Notorious (1946) and Under Capricorn (1949). In 1950 she married Robert Rossellini and moved to Italy, where she made several films, including Strombolli (1949), Europa 51 (1952) and Journey to Italy (1953). In the mid 1950s, she divorced Rossellini. She returned to Hollywood, and immediately in 1956, won her second Oscar for the film Anastasia. In 1978, she starred in Bergman’s Autumn sonata. During her career, she appeared in forty-five roles.
