James Mason (Huddersfield, Velika Britanija, 15. svibnja 1909. - Lausanne, Švicarska, 27. srpnja 1984.)

Britanski i američki glumac pohađao je Marlborough koledž i potom studirao arhitekturu na Cambridgeu gdje je diplomirao 1931. godine. Za vrijeme studija bio je član sveučilišne glumačke grupe, a glumom se nastavio baviti i po završetku studija. Profesionalni debut ostvario je ulogom na londonskom West Endu 1933. godine. Godinu kasnije priključio se nakratko i Old Vic kazalištu, a 1935. godine debitira na filmu ulogom u Late Extra. U to vrijeme, postojao je zakon po kojem su kina morala prikazivati određen broj britanskih filmova zbog čega je snimano mnogo filmova da bi se popunila kvota. Mason od 1935. do 1948. godine redovno nastupa u tim filmovima, a prvi važniji film mu je I Met a Murderer (1939.) u kojem je osim kao glumac, sudjelovao i kao koproducent i koscenarist. Ipak, prvi pravi uspjeh postiže ulogom u The Man in Grey (1943.). Popularnost potvrđuje ulogama u romantičnim filmovima Fanny by Gaslight (1944.) i The Wicked Lady (1945.), dok mu Sedmi veo (The Seventh Veil, 1945.) donosi i međunarodnu slavu. Slijedi uloga u zapaženom filmu Bjegunac (Odd Man Out, 1947.) Carola Reeda i The Upturned Glass (1947.) nakon kojeg odlazi u Hollywood. Tamo odbija potpisati dugogodišnji ugovor s filmskim studijima i samostalno bira uloge osiguravajući njihovu raznolikost. Glumi u filmovima Caught (1949.) i The Reckless Moment (1949.) Maxa Ophülsa i tumači Gustavea Flauberta u Madame Bovary (1949.). S Avom Gardner glumi u romantičnom filmu Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951.), glumi Erwina Rommela u The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel (1951.) i The Desert Rats (1953.), negativca u The Prisoner of Zenda (1952.). Film Operacija Cicero (5 Fingers, 1952.) u kojem je glumio špijuna smatra se njegovim najboljim ostvarenjem snimljenim u Americi, a s redateljem filma, Josephom Mankiewiczem, surađuje i u filmovu Julius Caesar (1953.) gdje ostvaruje zapaženu ulogu Bruta. Nakon uloge u Berlinskoj priči (The Man Between, 1953.) Carola Reeda, okušava se u režiji kratkometražnim The Child (1954.) u kojem uloge tumače njegova supruga i kći. Vrativši se glumi dobiva pohvale od kritike za ulogu u Zvijezda je rođena (A Star Is Born, 1954.) Georgea Cukora za koji dobiva i jedinu nominaciju za Oscara za glavnu ulogu. Zahvaljujući uspjehu filma 20 000 milja pod morem (20000 Leagues Under the Sea, 1954.) pokreće realizaciju filma Važnije od života (Bigger Than Life, 1956.) u kojem sudjeluje kao glumac i producent, no film ne postiže uspjeh. Slijede uloge u popularnom Putovanje u središte Zemlje (Journey to the Center of the Earth, 1959.) i uloga negativca u Sjever sjeverozapad (North by Northwest, 1959.) Alfreda Hitchcocka. Nakratko se vraća u Englesku gdje glumi u The Trials of Oscar Wilde (1960.), a dvije godine kasnije s obitelji seli iz SAD-a u Švicarsku. Tada tumači glavnu mušku ulogu u filmu Lolita (1962.) Stanleya Kubricka. Ostatak šezdesetih i sedamdesetih, sve do smrti sredinom osamdesetih ostaje aktivan tumačeći glavne i sporedne uloge u američkim, engleskim i europskim produkcijama. Izdvajaju se uloge u Pad Rimskog Carstva (The Fall of the Roman Empire, 1964.) Anthonya Manna i Georgy Girl (1966.) za koji je dobio nominaciju za Oscara za sporednu ulogu. Iste godine filmom The Deadly Affair (1966.) započinje prvu od brojnih budućih glumačkih suradnji s redateljem Sidneyem Lumetom. Za ulogu u njegovoj pravnoj drami Presuda (The Verdict, 1982.) dobija zadnju nominaciju za Oscara za sporednu ulogu. Zadnju zapaženu glavnu ulogu ostvaruje u filmu The Shooting Party (1985.) Alana Bridgesa.
