Olivera Marković (Belgrade, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, May 3, 1925 – Belgarde, Serbia, July 2, 2011)


Olivera Marković, one of the last great actresses of the Yugoslavian cinema, spent her childhood in Niš. After graduation her parents and Olivera returned to Belgrade where she enrolled in art history studies. However, after her first small role in the drama U planinama Jugoslavije, directed by the Russian director Abram Room in 1945, she enrolled in the drama art academy. At the age of twenty she married Rade Marković and later became famous with his last name. She had a rich career in theatre, as well as in film and on television, having starred in seventy films and ninety TV shows and series. In the early 1950s, she was a member of the Belgrade Drama Theatre together with her husband and acted in adaptations of plays by modern American playwrights such as Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams and William Inge. She also acted in plays based on works by Bernard Shaw, William Shakespeare, Carlo Goldoni, Fyodor Dostoyevsky (Crime and Punishment), Jean Anouilh, Eugene O'Neil, Molière, Checkhov (Three Sisters), Gogol (The Marriage), Bertolt Brecht (Mother Courage) and many others. She was the member of the National Theatre in Belgrade from 1967 until her retirement in 1989, having played in more than thirty important roles. Besides appearances in the theatre, she acted in many TV series and shows (Bolji život, 1987, Grlom u jagode, 1976). Her first more important film roles were in the war drama Šolaja (1955) directed by Vojo Nanović, thriller Posljednji kolosijek (1956) by Žika Mitrović and melodrama Samo ljudi (Men Only, 1957) by Branko Bauer. She was Veljko Bulajić’s favorite actress and acted in his films Vlak bez voznog reda (Train Without a Timetable, 1959), Uzavreli grad (The First Fires, 1961) and Kozara (1962). Some of her most important film roles include the films Drug predsednik centarfor (Comrade President Center-Forward, 1960) directed by Žorž Skrigin, Sibirska ledi Magbet (Siberian Lady Macbeth, 1963) by Andrzej Wajda, Petrijin venac (1980) by Srđan Karanović, Moj tata na određeno vreme (1982) by Milan Jelić, Braća po materi (1988) by Zdravko Šotre. During her first marriage to Rade Marković (her second marriage was to another actor, Dušan Bulajić) she had a son, Goran Marković, who became a successful film and theatre director. They collaborated on many of his films, such as Nacionalna klasa (National Class Category Up to 785 ccm, 1979), Majstori, majstori (All That Jack's, 1980), Već viđeno (Reflections, 1987), Sabirni centar (The Meeting Point, 1989), Tito i ja (Tito and Me, 1992), Urnebesna tragedija (The Tragic Burlesque, 1995), Kordon (The Cordon, 2002). She won two Golden Arenas in Pula: as Best Actress in Službeni položaj (1964) by Fadil Hadžić and Best Supporting Actress in Balkan ekspres (1983) by Branko Baletić. In August 1987, she was awarded the life-time achievement award for her work on film Slavica, and in 1988 received a life-time achievement award for her work in the theatre Dobričin prsten. She was an excellent singer and loved to sing Russian ballads. She had many concerts and published several records. She passed away in July 2011, at the age of 87, after a long and grave illness.
