Rade Marković - biography

Rade Marković (Belgrade, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, October 14, 1921 - Zabok, Croatia, September 10, 2010)

Radomir Marković, better known by the nickname Rade, was one of the most famous actors of modernism to have had a strong influence on the development of the post-war Yugoslavian theatre. Nevertheless, most will remember him for the many TV and film roles of his sixty-year long career. He studied at the Technical Faculty and then afterwards at the Faculty of Philosophy, but in the end decided to become an actor. He got his first acting experiences as a member of the amateur acting group at Kolarac. From 1946 to 1949 he acted in the student theatre and in 1959, he became a professional actor in the Belgrade Drama Theatre. Two years later he became a freelancer and acted in many theatres (Atelier 212, National Theatre, Belgrade Drama Theatre). Among his many theatre roles, his most famous ones include the plays Nikoletina Bursać by Branko Ćopić (he also starred in the TV drama with the same title from 1958), Cat On A Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams, Oblomov by Goncharov and Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett. He made his film debut in Immortal Youth (Besmrtna mladost, 1948) by Vojislav Nanović, with whom he also collaborated on The Magic Sword (Čudotvorni mač, 1950) and Šolaja (1955). He starred in films such as Zenica (1957), Te noći (1958) and Kako su se voleli Romeo i Julija? From his first marriage to the actress Olivera Marković, he had a son, Goran Marković, who is a well-known film and theatre director, and they made several films together: National Class Category Up to 785 ccm (Nacionalna klasa, 1979), All That Jack's (Majstori, majstori, 1980), Variola vera (1982), The Meeting Point (Sabirni centar, 1989), Tito i ja (Tito and Me, 1992). His last film role was in the comedy Mi nismo anđeli 2 (We Are Not Angels 2, 2005) by Srđan Dragojević. During his rich acting career he starred in more than a hundred plays, seventy films and sixty television films and series, such as Život je lep (1975), Jelenko (1981), Otpisani (1974-1975). He received a lot of awards and recognition for his work: in Pula he won the Silver Arena as Best Supporting Actor for Vojislav Nanović’s Šolaja (1955) in 1956, Silver Arena as Best Actor for Joze Gale’s Tuđa zemlja (1957) in 1957, and a Silver Arena for Best Actor for Stole Janković’s Radopolje (1963) in 1963.
