Dear reader and viewer,
This program of the newest Spanish films is an attempt to present the real situation of the seventh art in contemporary Spain. In comparison to previous times, it is not hard to conclude that there is an increase in the resources at hand, a greater diversity of topics, and a stronger international affirmation of these directors and their works.
Viewers will face the fear of the unknown in Alejandro Amenabar’s film The Others. They will be snared in webs of ambition in Augustin Diaz Yanes’s Nadie hablará de nosotras cuando hayamos muerto. Under the firm guidance of Chus Gutierrez’s hand, they will dive into the ethnically diverse Spain in her Alma gitana. They will enjoy the archetypal road film El deseo de ser piel roja by Alfonso Ungria.
The short films shown before the feature films are like delectable appetizers on a savory cinematographic menu.
We hope that after this program of new Spanish films, sponsored by the Spanish Embassy in the Republic of Croatia, the audience will know more about contemporary Spain and its film artists. Above all, we hope that viewers will enjoy themselves watching these boundary-stretching films and thereby feel closer to audiences from other cultures.
Víctor Hugo Portillo Angulo
