Ruby Dee – Actress and Activist

Ruby Dee’s activist engagement also left its mark on her acting career

Ruby Dee, actress and activist for human rights, began her career in late 1950’s in the film adaptation of the Broadway play A Raisin in the Sun, in which her partner was Sydney Poitier. Her first films were shown only in segregated film theatres and all the people involved in their production were black. Her activist engagement left a mark on her acting career when she starred in the drama Uptight by Julles Dasin from 1968. Also, it was evident in her off Broadway phase, when she starred in Fugard’s anti-apartheid play „Boesman And Lena“. She starred in Spike Lee’s two best films – Do the Right Thing and Jungle Fever, and in 2007, she was nominated for an Oscar for her role of Denzel Washington’s mother in Scott’s American Gangster.
