Ružica Sokić (Belgrade, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, December 14, 1934 - Belgrade, Serbia, December 19, 2013).
Film and television actress with a hundred and eighty roles and many more theatrical roles. Since childhood, she had participated in Radio Belgrade’s Children’s Radio Drama Group. In 1958, she graduated from the Academy for Theatre, Radio and Television in Belgrade. For a short time she was a member of the Contemporary Theatre, after which she transferred to Atelje 212. She was a permanent member of Atelje 212 since 1961, performing for thirty-seven seasons in that theatre. However, during her career she also performed in almost all other theatres in Belgrade. She made her debut on film in 1957 in a segment of the omnibus Saturday Night by Vladimir Pogačić, but she was uncredited. After that she appeared in several TV films, followed by another uncredited role in one feature film and a small role in Zdravko Randić’s film Countrymen (1963). Her first major role, in Jovan Živanović’s The Bitter Part of the River (1965), brought her the Silver Arena for Best Supporting Actress at the Pula Film Festival. She appeared in the segment Put of the omnibus Vreme ljubavi (1966) and had a prominent role in Branko Čelović’s Boxers Go to Heaven (1967). In that same year she starred in Dušan Makavejev’s drama Love Affair, or the Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator (1967) and confirmed her acting talent with the role of a singer in Živojin Pavlović’s film When I Am Dead and Gone (1967). Equally active in numerous television films, she starred in Antun Vrdoljak’s feature film Love and Some Swear Words (1969) as well as the leading actress in the TV series Ceo život za godinu dana (1971). This was followed by a role in Zdravko Randić’s film Traces of a Black Haired Girl (1972). The excellent portrayal of a simple streetwalker in Vladimir Tadej’s film Žuta (1973) brought her the Golden Arena at Pula. She had previously played the same role in the theatre at Atelje 212. A year later, she won another Golden Arena, for Best Supporting Actress in Živorad Žika Mitrović’s partisan spectacle Guns of War (1974). She worked with the director Vladimir Tadej again on his subsequent films Hitler iz našeg sokaka (1975), Daredevil's Time (1977) and Pakleni otok (1979) and with Goran Paskaljević on the drama Beach Guard in Winter (1976). She played in all four sequels of the hugely popular comedy series Tight Skin (1982) by Mića Milošević, Tight Skin 2 (1987) by Milan Živković, Tight Skin 3 (1988) by Aleksandar Đorđević and Tight Skin 4 (1991) by Milan Živković. During the 1980’s, she starred in Aleksandar Đorđević’s comedy Avanture Borivoja Surdilovića (1980), Živorad Žika Mitrović’s drama Savamala (1982), Milutin Kosovac’s Adi (1985), Zoran Čalić’s comedy Second Žika’s Dynasty (1986), Dragan Kresoja’s drama Oktoberfest (1987) and Božidar Nikolić’s drama Jednog lepog dana (1988). In the 1990’s, she continued to actively star in television films, she appeared in numerous episodes of the television series Srećni ljudi in 1995 and 1996 and acted in Dragan Kresoja’s feature films The Original of the Forgery (1991), Full Moon Over Belgrade (1993) and Dark is the Night (1995) and Goran Paskaljević’s Tango Argentino (1992). Her last role on TV was in the series Nepobedivo srce in 2011, and among her last roles on the big screen the most notable remains the role in Zdravko Šotra’s Zona Zamfirova (2002). In August 2003, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award “Pavle Vuisić” from the Association of Film Artists of Serbia for her contribution to Yugoslav cinema and in 2012 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award “Dobričin prsten” from the Drama Artists’ Association of Serbia. Ctober 2010, she published her book of memoires, “Passion for flying”, written during the time when she could not act because of a broken hip. She died of Alzheimer's at the age of 79.
