One of the finest Serbian actresses, her early career began in amateur groups. She made her film debut at the tender age of sixteen in the film Butterfly Cloud (Leptirov oblak, 1977) directed by Zdravko Randić. In 1982 she graduated with a degree in acting from the College of Drama Arts in Belgrade. Her next major role was in the television series Zvezde koje ne tamne (1980), but she acquired widespread popularity playing Tomboy (Dečka) in the film Sugar Water (Šećerna vodica, 1983) by Svetislav Prelić. She gave notable performances in famous Serbian films like Strangler vs. Strangler (Davitelj protiv davitelja, 1984) by Slobodan Šijan, Balkan spy (Balkanski špijun, 1984) by Dušan Kovačević and Bota Nikolić, the omnibus The Fall of Rock and Roll (Kako je propao rokenrol, 1989), We’re no angels (Mi nismo anđeli, 1992) by Srđan Dragojević, Uvod u drugi život (1992) by Mišo Radivojević. For her supporting role in the film Life is Beautiful (Život je lep, 1985) by Bora Drašković, she received an award at the Venice Film Festival in 1985. She had leading roles in the films Una (1984), Gospođica Julija (1985) and Majstor i Šampita (1986). Later in her career Sonja Savić collaborated with the Slovenian director Jan Cvitkovič, playing in his films Bread and milk (Kruh i mlijeko, 2001) and Gravehopping (Od groba do groba, 2005). Her last films were Virtual reality (Virtualna stvarnost, 2001), The Danube (Donau, Duna, Dunaj, Dunav, Dunarea; 2003), South by Southeast (Jug jugoistok, 2005) and Princ od papira (2008). Besides films, she acted in numerous TV series, the most recent being Vratit će se rode. During her final ten years she mostly worked in experimental films, music and multimedia, feeling unjustly neglected by the Serbian cultural scene. She was a person who rejected all taboos and harshly criticized any form of hypocrisy and, as she used to say, “the general spleen and backwater of the cultural establishment”.
