Vida Jerman (Zagreb, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, May 28, 1939 - Zagreb, Croatia, December 10, 2011)


Vida Jerman was a grand dame of Croatian theatre and an equally talented film and television actress. She was a polyglot who studied English, Italian and Spanish at the Faculty of Philosophy. However, her love for acting was stronger and she graduated from the Academy of Drama Arts in Zagreb. She was an equally active theatre, film and TV actress. For the last few decades of her life, she was a member of Trešnja Theatre. For many years she was a member of the Universal Esperanto Association (UEA) and its expert delegate for theatre. Thanks to her talent and knowledge of foreign languages she acted in many international productions in English, German and Italian, starring opposite Meryl Streep (Sophie's Choice, 1982), Yul Brinner, John Gielgoud, Herbert Lom, James Coburn (Cross of Iron, 1977, Omar Sharif (Memories of Midnight, 1991). Her first film role was in the co-production Winnetou and Shatterhand in the Valley of Death (Winnetou und Shatterhand im Tal der Toten, 1968) by Harald Reinl, filmed in these parts. Nevertheless, she will always be remembered for her second film role in One Song a Day Takes Mischief Away (Tko pjeva zlo ne misli, 1970) by Krešo Golik as Marijana. In Maškarada (1971) by Boštjan Hladnik she had the leading role and also starred in Nemir (1982) by Adi Ahmet Imamović, Oficir s ružom (1987) by Dejan Šorak, Sokol Did Not Love Him (Sokol ga nije volio, 1988) by Branko Schmidt, Treća žena (1997) by Zoran Tadić and Čaruga (1991) by Rajko Grlić. Her last film role was a small one in Rajko Grlić’s Just Between Us (Neka ostane među nama, 2010). Some of her most famous television roles were in the series Čovik i po (1974), Mačak pod šljemom (1978), Inspektor Vinko (1984), Neuništivi (1990) and more recently produced Naša mala klinika (2004 - 2007), Zabranjena ljubav (2005-2007), Odmori se, zaslužio si (2006-2009), Dolina sunca (2009-2010). In June 1997, she received the Order of the President of Croatia for her impact on theatre arts and special merit in representing Croatian culture in our country and abroad.
