Emir Kusturica took a degree in film and directing from FAMU in Prague in 1977. In 1981, he made his feature film debut with Sjećaš li se Dolly Bell at the Venice film festival. Afterwards he made 13. jul (1982), Otac na službenom putu (1985; won the Golden Palm in Cannes), Dom za vešanje (1989), Arizona dream (1993), Podzemlje (Underground), which won the Golden Palm in Cannes in 1995, Crni mačor bela mačka (1998) and Život je čudo.

Synopsis:

Dark comedy about a group of people hiding in the underground convinced that there is still a war going on above them. The film begins at the time of WW II when Marko and his best friend fell in love with the same woman, actress Natalija. In order to protect their families, they hide in Marko’s wine cellar and start to produce arms for their fellow fighters.

Synopsis:

The story takes place in 1948, in the year when Tito broke free from Stalin’s politics, which resulted in a confusing and dangerous situation for many hardcore Yugoslav Communists. A reckless remark to a newspaper drawing is sufficient to put Meąa in prison. His son, Malik, tells the whole story and explains how his mother persuaded him that Meąa went away on a business trip instead of prison.
