Director
A Spanish designer and artist in illustration, painting, graphics, comics, animation, web and product design, as well as interior design, he received his first significant recognition for designing the city of Barcelona logo in 1979. Ten years later, he opened his own creative studio Estudio Mariscal in Barcelona. He is the creator of Cobi, the mascot of 1992 Olympic Games, as well as the Hanover Expo mascot in 2000. He directed short animation TV films for both Cobi and Twipsy (The Cobi Troupe, 1992). He met Fernando Trueba when he designed the poster for his documentary film about Latin American jazz Calle 54 (2000). They continued their collaboration on many projects, and, both being music lovers, they decided to make an animated feature-length film. With the help of Tono Errando, Mariscal’s younger brother who is in charge of audiovisual department in the studio, the three of them directed Chico and Rita (2010) together. The film won the Goya Award for Best Animation in 2011, and was nominated for an Oscar in the same category in 2012.
