Nakata is a Japanese director and screenwriter most famous for his horror films The Ring (Ringu, 1998) and The Ring 2 (Ringu 2, 1999). He also directed the American remake of the original sequel The Ring 2 (2005). His other well-known film is Honogurai mizu no soko kara / Dark Water (2002). He began his career directing low-budget porn films (pinku eiga); later he directed the documentary about the director Joseph Losey: The Man with Four Names (1998), the thriller Chaos (1999), a documentary about the director of novel porn films Masaru Konumu Sadistic and Masochistic (2000), the romantic drama Garasu no nô (Sleeping Bride, 2000), the drama Last Scene (2002), Kaidan (2007) and L: Change the World (2008) based on the popular manga Desu Nōto. Based on his experiences in Hollywood, he directed the documentary Hariuddo kantoku-gaku nyûmon (Foreign Filmmakers' Guide to Hollywood, 2009). His latest two films are thrillers made in British production Chatroom (2010) and Inshite miru: 7-kakan no desu gêmu (The Incite Mill, 2010).
