He started writing scripts in 1993, mostly for Spanish TV series, and upon receiving a scholarship he enrolled in film studies at the Columbia University in New York. After returning to Spain he made shorts ¡Gol! (2002), Profilaxis (2003), Exprés (2003), Física II (2004) and La culpa del alpinista (2004), based on the idea and script by Julio Medem. His first feature-length film Dark Blue Almost Black (Azuloscurocasinegro, 2006) brought him a Spanish Goya Award for best new director, as well as awards at Venice and Stockholm festivals. After that he made the short drama Traumalogía (2007), short comedy Pene (2007) and feature-length comedy Gordos (2009). This was followed by the short comedy (Uno de los) primos (2010), and the acclaimed feature-length Primos (2011). Currently his latest film is the comedy La gran familia española (2013).
