Based on the life story of the Russian priest and painter of icons Andrei Rublev, the film consists of the prologue, eight episodes and the epilogue in color. It portrays Russia in the beginning of the 15th century during Tartary and Mongol invasions. The plot is circular: Rublev leaves the convent to learn about his people’s suffering, to lose and regain his faith and finally his return to the same convent where he created his magnificent work – icon of the Holy Trinity.
The film won the international critics’ award in Cannes in 1969.
