Synopsis:
The story takes place in Prague, which is occupied by the Soviet Union. We follow the main character, cello player Fran Louka, who was recently fired from the symphony orchestra and now makes a living playing at funerals. He has many debts and cannot repay them; but soon receives an offer to marry a Russian woman who needs Czech citizenship. Louka reluctantly accepts the offer -- only after the wedding realizing that by marrying the Russian he has also gained custody of her small son.
This film won an Oscar and Golden Globe as Best foreign film in 1997.
