Synopsis:
The story takes place in Zagreb and describes an ordinary day in one family. The family consists of Ana, a divorced, retired professor of French and English, and her three grown-up children. There is Katarina, a thirty-year old woman who works as a cartoon animator and has recently divorced her partner of many years and returned home, Dražen, a twenty-nine-year-old man who has left his sociology studies and tries to earn money as a night watchman, and finally there is Tvrtko, who is the youngest child and a student in the middle of a crisis with his girlfriend Nataša, a law student from Dubrovnik. The film focuses on the individual problems of all the characters and describes their mutual relationships. All their relationships are well developed, which enables us at the end of the film to learn about all the characters equally and develop familiar relationships with them. We follow the events on the day of Katarina’s return home. Since she has been gone for more than two years, many things have changed and her return causes many complications. The new situation influences all the characters and slowly we discover many suppressed problems and dissatisfactions. This film may be described as an urban story about an average family from Zagreb and its familiar problems. The authors paid equal attention to both young and old characters and mainly describe the generational gap and the problems that arise from similarities and differences of several generations. This film is best described as a drama with comedy elements but it is also very realistic because the authors wanted to describe the daily lives of urban people as realistically as possible. Moreover, this film questions the story’s structure and thoroughly analyzes its cinematography and acting in order to raise the level of form and not just the content. Consequently, along with educated professional actors there are several non-professional actors in this film who are treated as witnesses. These characters have a dramaturgical function in this film and they develop the story as active narrators. They also allow the viewers to compare reality with fiction, thus making this simple story more mysterious and complex. The idea for this project was born in 2000. The story of this film is closely connected to two theatre projects, Usporavanja and Nesigurna priča, since they all deal with the same family. Therefore, we may say that the work with actors on previous theatre projects was the basis for this film. Before shooting, the whole film crew went through special preparations in order to adapt more easily to the filming process, which is also an important part of this whole project. Namely, the manner of working with actors and treatment of the text in the theatre has been kept in the film as well. The main goal was to have convincing and spontaneous acting as well as a fluid story structure that supports the reality.
