Synopsis:
Hortense is a successful black doctor who, after her adoptive parents’ death, tries to find her biological parents. To her great surprise, she discovers that her biological mother is a white factory worker, Cynthia. She lives in a small apartment with her hostile step-daughter, Roxanne. After a separation of almost two years, Cynthia’s brother Maurice, a successful photographer, comes to visit her. He decides to gather the whole family for Roxanne’s twenty-first birthday party, even though his wife Monice strongly opposes it. Cynthia, who after much indecision decides to confess to Hortense that she really is her mother, invites her newfound daughter and her friend from the factory to the party… This film was nominated for the Oscar award in five categories, including those for best film and best director.
