Modernist Praxis of The Socialist Everyday Life
The history of art in the 20th century in East European region was mostly formed by avant-garde and modernist approach. In the last 25 years, post-social narratives have been exclusively interpreting progressive, experimental art initiatives of that time in the context of cultural resistance and subversion. The fact that the ruling regimes in those countries founded their dogma on socially sensitive, collectivist and humanistic ideas of the authentic left wing, with the goal of modernization of the society through education, is almost never mentioned and remains almost completely forgotten. In this program consisting of six exquisite documentaries from Hungary and former Yugoslavia, we will see how these countries systematically promoted participation in social life, empowerment of ethnic minorities, emancipation of the mentally ill, anti-fascism and culture. The program was selected by
Sebestyén Kodolányi, former director of the Bela Balasz Archive in Budapest and he will present it himself.
