Director
Kapoor is an Indian actor, producer and director. The son of the Indian famous actor Prithviraj Kapoor, he entered the world of cinema early on. As an eleven year old boy he acted in the film Inquilab (1935). He had his first bigger role in the film Neel Kamal (1947). At the age of only 24 he founded his own production house R. K. Films and directed the film Aag (1948), thus becoming the youngest Indian film director at the time. The film was not successful but it was the first of his many acting collaborations with the popular actress Nargis. They co-starred again in the film Andaz (1949). With his next directing, acting and producing work on Barsaat (1949), Awaara (1951) and Shree 420 (1955) he established his recognizable film character of a drifter, similar to the hero of Chaplin’s films. In 1964, he made his first film in color, Sangam, in which he also appeared in his last noteworthy leading role. Afterwards he devoted his career to directing and played smaller parts. After six years of working on it, Kapoor directed Mera Naam Joker (1970), which turned out to be a financial disaster. He acted together with his father Prithviraj and son Randhir in the son’s directing debut Kal aaj aur kal (1971). When he directed his very successful film Bobby (1973) he jump-started the acting career of his other son Rishi. The other films he directed include Satyam Shivam Sundaram: Love Sublime (1978), Prem Rog (1982) and the last one he directed Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985). His last film role was in Vakil Babu (1982).
