Director
Mehta (born in 1952) is an Indian director, screenwriter and producer. He graduated with a degree in directing from the Indian Institute for Film and Television and worked for years as a TV producer. Outside of India his most famous films include his debut A Folk Tale (Bhavni Bhavai, 1980) and Spices (Mirch Masala, 1985) which won an award as the best film at the Hawaii Film Festival in 1987. His other feature films include The Festival of Fire (Holi, 1983), Hero Hiralal (1988), Maya Memsaab (Maya, 1992), based on the novel “Madame Bovary” by Gustav Flaubert, Sardar (1993), Oh Darling Yeh Hai India (1995), the thriller Aar Ya Paar (1997) and the historical The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandrey (2005). He is currently working on his film The Rebel. He has also made several TV series and documentaries.

Synopsis:

The story takes place in a small poor village in the time of the British reign in India. Subedar, a government tax collector, comes to the village accompanied by soldiers. When he sees the beautiful Sonbai, he forgets taxes and openly yearns for her. Furthermore, he asks for her as a gift from the village. The villagers decide to give her away while her husband is away. However, proud Sonbai refuses to subjugate herself to Subedar’s tyranny and runs away to a spice factory.
