Mehta (born in 1952) is an Indian director, screenwriter and producer. He graduated with a degree in directing from the Indian Institute for Film and Television and worked for years as a TV producer. Outside of India his most famous films include his debut
A Folk Tale (Bhavni Bhavai, 1980) and
Spices (Mirch Masala, 1985) which won an award as the best film at the Hawaii Film Festival in 1987. His other feature films include
The Festival of Fire (Holi, 1983),
Hero Hiralal (1988),
Maya Memsaab (Maya, 1992), based on the novel “Madame Bovary” by Gustav Flaubert,
Sardar (1993),
Oh Darling Yeh Hai India (1995), the thriller
Aar Ya Paar (1997) and the historical
The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandrey (2005). He is currently working on his film
The Rebel. He has also made several TV series and documentaries.
