Zvonimir Berković was born on March 21, 1928, in Belgrade. He is
a director and scriptwriter. He studied violin at the conservatory and direction at the Theatrical Academy in Zagreb. He worked in puppet theatre and wrote musical and theatre criticism. He began working on film in 1954. As the first dramaturge in Jadran film, he soon began writing screenplays. For the screenplay of the film H-8 (1958, directed by Nikola Tanhofer), which he wrote with Tomislav Butorac, he won the Golden Arena and the award of the
public Deer at the festival in Pula. The first film he directed was the documentary My Flat (1962), which won awards at festivals in Belgrade and Cannes. In 1966 he made his debut as feature film director with Rondo. The film was awarded in Pula with six awards, and with another for screenplay at the festival in Atlanta (USA). The second film, A Trip to the Place of the Accident, was shot at the beginning of 1970s. His third film, Premeditated Love Letters (1985), is one of the most important films of the
1980s, while Countess Dora (1993) is certainly one of the most valuable works of Croatian cinema of the 1990s. For a number of years, Berković worked as professor of film script and dramaturgy at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb. For the past decade, he has commented extensively on the social state of affairs and regularly contributed his texts to several newspapers and magazines.
