The story takes place during the Algerian war, and the main character is a French contract killer who has to kill a man fighting for an independent Algiers. This film was made in 1960 but was released only in 1963 due to censorship.

This is Godard’s first film in color, full of experiments (discontinuity of picture and sound, unexpected changes of rhythm).

Anna Karina plays a woman who leaves her husband and child in order to become an actress. However, her dream does not come true and she becomes a prostitute. This film is divided into twelve chapters and is a direct hommage to Carl Theodor Dreyer. The main chatacter, Nana, is an hommage to a famous silent era actress Louise Brooks.
