Arraes is a Brazilian producer, director and screenwriter. As a son of the former governor of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco, during the military dictatorship, he and his family lived in exile in Algiers and France from 1969 to 1979. He studied math and anthropology. In 1981 he started directing TV series. Nineteen years later, he made his first feature film
A Dog's Will (O Auto da Compadecida, 2000). Afterwards he made
Caramuru - A Invenção do Brasil (2001), the romantic comedy
Lisbela and the Prisoner (Lisbela e o Prisioneiro 2003) and the drama
Romance (2008). He is currently working on the comedy
O Bem Amado (2010).
