career as a stand-up comedian, and made his acting debut in 1976 in the
esteemed film Taxi Driver (1976) directed by Martin Scorsese. He directed
these films: Mother (1996), Defending Your Life (1991), Lost in
America (1985), Modern Romance (1981) and Real Life (1979). He
won the National Society of Film Critics’ award for his films Lost in
America and Mother, which also won the New York Film Critics
Circle and ShoWest awards. Brooks made two comic albums - Comedy
Minus One and A Star is Bought (nominated for Grammy). He is
an outstanding actor who often lends his voice to cartoon characters.
