Jae-yong Kwak
22.05.1959, South Korea
Korean director and screenwriter. He studied physics at the Kyunghee University but decided to become a film maker. His first film Watercolor Painting in a Rainy Day (Bioneun nalui suchaehwa, 1989) was already a success. He made its sequel Watercolor Painting in a Rainy Day 2 (1993) as well as Autumn Trip (Ga-eul-yeohaeng, 1992). These were less successful and he directed his next feature film eight years later; it was the romantic comedy My Sassy Girl (Yeopgijeogin Geunyeo, 2001), which was the most successful Korean comedy until that time. He returned to the topic of love in his next films The Classic (Keulraesik, 2003), Windstruck (2004), My Mighty Princess (Mulim Yeodaesaeng, 2008), My Girlfriend Is a Cyborg (Boku no Kanojo wa Saibōgu, 2008) in Japanese coproduction and Meet Miss Anxiety (2014) in Chinese coproduction. He wrote screenplays for several films by other directors and the romantic thriller Time Renegades (Siganitalja, 2015) is currently his last film.
