A Spanish director, writer, painter and designer, by the full name Joan Josep Bigas Luna. He studied painting and design and professionally worked in interior and industrial design. Beginning in the 1970’s, he occasionally made low-budget short erotic films. He made his first feature-length movfilms ies in 1978 - thriller
Tattoo and drama
Bilbao, followed by an equally dark drama
Poodle (1979). The religious thriller Reborn (1981) starring Dennis Hopper is his only film in English language. After the drama
Lola (1986) and the horror
Anguish (1987), he made
The Ages of Lulú (1990), the first film to get him the attention of a wider audience. The movie established eroticism as his distinctive cinematic motif along with the elements of surrealism. As a student, he sold one of the paintings from his first exhibition to Salvador Dalí, and later they became good freind. He is best known for his melodrama
Ham, Ham (Jamón, jamón, 1992), which made Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem famous, and won a Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival (shared with
Hotel de luxe by Dan Pita and
Un coeur en hiver by Claude Sautet). He continued his collaboration with Javier Bardem in the equally notable
Golden balls (Huevos de oro, 1993). A surreal fantasy
The Tit and the Moon (La teta y la luna 1994), with a strong erotic motif as well, is the third part of his Iberian trilogy, the first part being
Ham, Ham and the second
Golden Balls. He was one of forty directors participating in the omnibus
Lumière and the Company (1995) that was dedicated to the centenary of the first film by the Lumière brothers. In 1996, he shot the drama
Bámbola, in which he continues with the same theme but with less success. The somewhat subtler
The Chambermaid on the Titanic (La femme de chambre du Titanic, 1997) won the Spanish Goya Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1998. In the drama
Volavérunt (1999) he again collaborated with Penelope Cruz and it is a story that revolves around the painter Francisco Goya, his painting
Naked Maja and the death of the Duchess of Alba. After that he made a romantic drama
Sound of the Sea (Son de Mar, 2001) and
My Name Is Juani (Yo soy la Juani, 2006) and
Di Di Hollywood (2010), which were far removed from the quality of his older movies and thus were less successful. He has been living with his wife on an organic farm in Tarragona since 1986, and he produced wine, ham and other organic products. From 2008 to 2012, he managed a musical café in Zaragoza, with, among other things, striptease and ham on the menu. He died after a long battle with cancer, and death interrupted his work on his last project. He worked as a co-writer on
Segon origen (2014) directed by Carles Porte, a science fiction film based on the novel by Manuel de Pedrola.
