Synopsis:

The film is set in Italy in 1867, at a time when Giuseppe Garibaldi trids to end the papal rule. His revolutionaries are captured by the government and condemned to death. The papal judge Monsignor Colombo is forced to do that, and is thinking of resigning from his position. He changes his mind when he finds out he has a son, born after a brief secret affair nineteen years ago, His son is now one of the revolutionaries facing the death penalty.
