Helke Sander

Berlin, Germany

 

Graduates from high school in Hamburg. In 1959 marries the Finnish director
Markku Lahtelau and moves to Helsinki, where he directs theatre plays. From 1964
works as a director on Finish television. In 1965 she returns to Germany, cannot
find a job for some time, studies at the Berlin Film Academy. Very active in the
student movement (one of her speeches was considered to be the start of the New
German Feminist Movement). She is the co-founder of a women group Bread and
Roses
(Brot und Rosen). She shoots many short and documentary films, works on
German television; from 1981 she is the professor at the Hamburg School of
Visual Arts.
