This director, screenwriter and actor started working in film in the 1960s as director's assistant on the films of Adurthi Subba Rao. His directing debut was
Aatma Gowravam (1965) winning a Nandi film award in Telugu language. Among some fifty films that he has made we must mention

Shankarabharanam (1979),
Sagara Sangamam (1983), which was awarded a Silver Lotus, National film Award for best regional film in Telugu.
Swathi Muthyam (The Pearl) was Indian Oscar nominee for best foreign film in 1986.

Swayam Krushi (1987),
Eeshwar (1989),
Aapathbandavudu (1992) and
Swarabhishekam (2004), which was awarded Silver Lotus for best film in Telugu, were all well received. His following film and his last work as a director,
Subhapradam (2010), was not a successful one. Directing and screenwriting in the early 1990s, he also started acting, having played in over twenty roles. In 1991 Padma Shri received state Raghupathy Venkaiah award for his contribution to Telugu cinema, and he has also received a state award in Andhra Pradesh, fourth award by its importance given by the Indian Government for achievements in various fields.
