Director, screenwriter and producer. As a third generation Korean living in China, in his films he often plays with the theme of the Korean Chinese. However, he entered the world of film by accident. While working as a professor of Chinese literature at Yanbian University, he bet his friend that anyone can make a film. The bet resulted in a short film

Eleven, 2001). He made his first feature film Tang shi (Tang Poetry, 2003) two years later. His drama
Mang zhong (Grain in Ear, 2005) attracted the attention of the international audience. Afterwards he made
Hyazgar (Desert Dream, 2007), which he filmed in the Mongolian desert. In 2008 he produced his first film,
Huangjin zhou (Routine Holiday, 2008) directed by Hongqi Li. In that same year he directed his two dramas
Iri (2008) and
Chongqing (2008). Currently his last feature film is
Dooman River (2010), made in coproduction with France. He also made a documentary
Pung-gyeong (Over There, 2013).
