Synopsis:

During WW II twelve-year-old Ivan Bondarev finds himself on the Eastern front after his parents were killed by the Germans. He joins the Russian soldiers and becomes their scout. By combining dreams and cruel reality we follow the young scout whose personality is shaped by the brutality of war and whose life seems to move in one inevitable direction: death.

With his feature debut Tarkovsky immediately attracted attention of the international audience and won the Golden Lion in Venice in 1962.
