Synopsis:
WW 2. Cesaria and her thirteen year old daughter Rosetta flee Rome which is
under constant bombing. They decide to go to Cesaria’s village. When they arrive
there, they find people who live in poverty barely surviving. There they meet an
intellectual Michele, a young antifascist whom everybody calls Professor. Both
mother and daughter have romantic feelings for him. But soon, Germans take
Michele away. Cesaria later learns that he was killed. As the liberation forces
progressed, mother and daughter decide to return to Rome. On the way they are
raped by Moroccan soldiers… For her role in this film Sophia Loren won an Oscar.
