Pripyat

Synopsis:
The town of Pripyat is situated five kilometres from the nuclear plant Chernobyl. Till 1986 it was inhabited by 50000 people. Today Pripyat is a ghost city guarded by the militia. The radiation here is greatly above the allowed levels – the town is placed in the centre of the area polluted by radiation. In spite of that, the area is not deserted. The third block of the plant is still active. The administration of the zone, militia and numerous research agencies offer well paid, and much sought-after work. Former landowners who moved back in illegally and many of those who are waiting to get new homes inhabit the villages around the area. The government turns a blind eye. The documentary describes a way of life of this improvised microcosm that functions by its own regulations: do not eat, do not drink, do not inhale dust when it is windy, and spend as little time outside as possible. Unfortunately, since our senses cannot sense the radioactivity, hardly anyone lives according to those recommendations.
