Synopsis:
Hélène lives in a small village on Corsica. Even though her life is not very exciting, she is happy with it. She is happily married, has a teenage daughter and works as a maid in a local hotel. One day she notices a couple in a hotel room playing chess. The game intrigues her and she decides to learn it. An introverted American, Mr Kröger, teaches her and gradually she becomes more confident in her abilities to play chess and in real life, as well.
