Daigo Fukuryu-Maru

(1959.)

Directed by: Kaneto Shindô
PHOTOGRAPHY: Eikichi Uematsu
Synopsis:

In March of 1954, as part of their tests the US Army detonated a hydrogen bomb on the Bikini atoll in the Pacific Ocean. Due to bad calculations, it resulted in a catastrophic rain of radioactive dust that landed on a Japanese fishing boat Daigo Fukuryu-Maru, which was, at the time, 160 kilometers away from the atoll. All the members of the crew got sick and the hero of this film died in September of the same year.

Goli otok

(Hadaka no shima, 1960)

Directed by: Kaneto Shindô
PHOTOGRAPHY: Kiyomi Kuroda
Synopsis:

This film, made almost with no dialogue and amateur actors, bordering on being a documentary film, shows the hard life of a family of four farmers. They live in isolation on an island from which, every day, they have to row to another island to get water for their fields. One day, when the parents are away fetching water, the older son gets sick…
