Branko (Milana) Marjanović (May 12, 1909, Zagreb – February 13, 1996, Zagreb)
graduated from the Merchant Academy and School for Drama Arts in Zagreb. Before
WW II, he directed, edited and wrote screenplays for fifty short films. After
the war, he wrote about forty screenplays and directed more than fifty short and
three feature films. He made his feature film debut with Zastava (1949)
while his second film Ciguli Miguli (1952) was banned until 1977. The
film Opsada (1956) is his last feature film. He also made the short film
Istra (1945), the second film made in Croatia after the WW II. From 1959,
he devoted himself to films about nature and in 1968, he made a series of films
about the African coast. Many critics consider him a unique author in the
cinematography of the former Yugoslavia and his five documentary omnibuses under
the same title Mala čuda velike prirode (1971-74) represent the peak of
his career. He won many domestic and international awards.
