Becker is a French director and screenwriter who became interested in film after meeting the American director King Vidor. From 1932 to 1939, he worked as an assistant director to Jean Renoir, and in 1934, together with Pierre Prévert he directed the short film
Le commissaire est bon enfant, le gendarme est sans pitié (1934). The following year he directed
Tęte de turc (1935), which he later refused to acknowledge as his own work. In 1939, he started working on the feature film
L' or du Cristobal (Cristobal's Gold, 1940), but after three weeks abandoned it and let Jean Stelli finish the film. His official film career started in 1942 when he directed the feature film
