Redatelj i scenarist, studirao je na filmskoj školi u Bratislavi, no nije imao priliku završiti studij jer ga je nacistički režim zatvorio u logor. Nakon rata režirao je kratki dokumentarni film Na troskách vyrastá zivot (1945). Radio je kao scenarist i asistent redatelja u filmskom studiju Barandov u Pragu, a prvi igrani film Katka režirao je 1950. godine. Potom je započeo redateljsko-scenarističku suradnju s Elmarom Klosom iz koje se posebno izdvajaju Smrt se zove Engelchen (Smrt si řika Engelchen, 1963) i klasik Trgovina na korzu (Obchod na korze, 1965), koji je dobio Oscara za najbolji strani film 1965. godine. Kadár je emigrirao u SAD 1968. godine i tamo nastavio režirati snimivši The Angel Levine (1970), Lies My Father Told Me (1975) i par tv filmova. Njegovo posljednje djelo je mini serija Freedom Road (1979) sa Muhammedom Alijem u glavnoj ulozi.

Synopsis:

The main character is a Czech partisan fighting in WW II. Just before peace is declared, he gets shot in the spine and has to be transported to a hospital. Trying to stay conscious he remembers the events that took place before he joined the partisans. His main motive for staying alive is to get his revenge on the German officer Engelchen, whom he holds responsible for the death of his friends.

Synopsis:

During WW II, when the Nazi government nationalized all Jews’ possessions, a lazy carpenter, Antonin Brtko, becomes the supervisor of a small store with sewing equipment. The owner of the store is an old, deaf Jewish woman, Rozalie, who lives in her own world and is completely unaware of the war and danger around her. She accepts Antonin thinking that he needs a job and over time they become friends. The film received an Oscar as Best Foreign Film in 1965.
